CPT is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 students to participate in paid or unpaid internships, cooperative education programs, or any other type of required practical training while the students are studying. Once students complete their education they may be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which that allows F-1 students to work in a job directly related to their field of study after completing their degree. OPT provides temporary employment authorization for up to 12 months (for most students) or up to 36 months for students in certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields post-graduation.
